I’d pour hours into writing an essay, only to receive a grade with vague comments like "Needs more analysis" or "Good effort." I was left wondering—what exactly needed improvement? How could I make my writing stronger? Now, as a teacher, I understand the challenge of giving meaningful feedback while juggling dozens of essays. But I also know that effective feedback is crucial for student growth.

The most common complaint from students? Vague feedback. A comment like "weak argument" is not enough. Students need specific guidance to improve. Instead of saying, "Needs better analysis," try:
"Your argument would be stronger if you provided evidence from at least two sources. Consider incorporating a counterargument for depth."
Imagine working hard on an essay only to see it covered in red ink with nothing but corrections. Discouraging, right? Instead of only pointing out what’s wrong, highlight what the student did well and give actionable steps for improvement.
"You structured your argument well, and your use of evidence is strong. Now, focus on developing your analysis by explaining how each piece of evidence supports your thesis."
Tip: Use the two stars and a wish method: two positive comments and one area for improvement.
